capribornioAaaaagggghhh I've been trying to avoid making this post because I'm a firm believer that complaining about fandom stuff you don't like it's useless and it's much better to focus on creating the stuff you like (yes yes I made that post about Bug Fables [which I love now btw], but that's more of a General Fandom Trend than beef with a particular fan, unlike this case), but oh boy I am Anger, and I can't stop thinking about it, so better put it out instead of keep fuming about it.
Listen. Listen. I know people have their squicks and stuff. I get it! That's not my problem! But when people start assuming everyone who doesn't Hate It is just cause they Don't Get How Horrible It Is... My patience goes down to zero. And this isn't even about Discourse! Which is the most frustating part of it, I think. Because, fuck, at least the Discourse Brigade are, like, transparent about this shit. Like, I don't agree with them at all, but I can see where they're coming from.
But this absolute piece of napkin is so gotdamn condescending. Like she's the only one, only person that Truly Understands The Implications, and anyone who doesn't agree with her clearly they just Don't Get It. And oh my god, how fuckin self centered can you be, to think that if another fan likes something that you don't is because they're not As Smart As You.
And the reason why this grinds my gears so damn much, besides what I said, is cause she's talking about, guess, Visser. And of all things, shipping the Vissers. Why? Because she's personally umcomfortable with the implied host rape. And I just. I feel like that damn meme of "I can excuse genocide and torture but I draw the line at rape" "You can excuse genocide and torture?" Like, holy shit, there are so many things wrong with the Vissers. Genocide. Mass enslavement. Torture. Even just between them, V3 personally tortured V1. Like. Why, of all things, is the rape specifically the one thing that makes the Vissers unshippable? Again, I get squicks! I don't mind that! Bit it just leaves me flabbergasted that she's like "oh, the people that ship that probably aren't thinking about the Implications", which, first of all, wrong, second, the shippers might be distracted thinking about that sexy explicitelly awful stuff.
This is getting long lmao. But anyway, the same fucking logic gets applied to Edriss/Essam/Allison/Hildy. And yeah, ok, that is a lot more subtle than V/V, but still. I mean, thank God I see reasonable people which call it "cute in a disturbing way" which is a great definition of that lmao. Like my first impression of it was "messed up, absolutely wrong, 1000% toxic, def some Stockholme Syndrome and the other syndrome whose name I can't remember going on in here, and all of it so absolutely sexy, compelling, and romantic in the worst way possible". And it just feels like This Person just doesn't get it. Which I wouldn't mind (again), if it weren't for her fucking tendency to Preach About How Wrong It Is. Yes! It's Wrong! That's why we like it! But noooo, she gotta assume it is because we Don't Realize, and oh my god, I can't with that level of self centeredness.
And part of it is that she complains about things that depict the four in a positive, romantic way, which, a long time ago, I might have agreed with (I like my messed up ships messed up, thanks) but after enough interaction with fluff shippers, I realized it's still wrong to complain about that. Because, homestly? The people who are drawing them being Soft and Fluffy aren't, in general, saying "this is how it's presented in canon", they're saying "i know canon has made a decision, but given it's a stupidass decision i've elected to ignore it". (My strict adherence to canon ass took a long fucking time to understand this attitude lmao. What do you mean that when you have a fic idea you don't revise the entire canon to make sure it follows it, or tag it as AU if I like it too much).
Anyway, point is, she's insufferable about this, I hate seeing these kind of posts from her, but seeing as she is THE BNF if the tumblr fandom I'll just have to vent about this where she can't see it, and try to ignore any post about this from her. At least now I have this post to reread anytime I'm fuming.
